It Is Not Just About The Property

During a divorce, property division is about more than just the property itself. It is about retaining the assets necessary to live comfortably following a divorce. It is about setting the stage for future financial stability, and that is worth fighting for.

At Atwell Law, LLC, in Easton, you will find an attorney with more than 15 years of family law experience. I am attorney Ryan Atwell, and I will use my experience to seek a fair division of marital property while also protecting your separate property, which is not subject to division during a divorce.

Understanding Equitable Division

Maryland is an equitable division state. Many people mistake the word equitable for the word equal. In actuality, equitable means fair. In some cases, an equal division of assets is fair. In other cases, however, it may be fair to shift the balance in one direction or another.

Determining what is fair is no simple task. It requires a careful look at a variety of factors, including each spouse’s age, health and earning capacity. My role as your lawyer is to make certain no factors are overlooked, and that your spouse does not attempt to take advantage of you. When it comes to protecting what is yours, I am willing to fight.

I am skilled in finding amicable resolutions through negotiation and other means, but I am also trial-ready if that is the appropriate course of action.
